Saving our agricultural land and stopping population growth and the crowding, traffic, and over-development that comes with it. This is important not only for maintaining the quality of life for our residents but keeping our businesses alive as well. Tourists will stop coming here if we build up everything and it’s a traffic nightmare to get anywhere. My kids have been to Waimea bay only twice because we are scared to go to the other side of haleiwa and get stuck. It’s a shame. This problem is within our power to fix we just need to recognize the root and take action.
We should not be building any more housing. Instead we should be creating frameworks to help local people to compete for the existing housing that we have. This could come in many forms: taxing out of state renters or buyers, providing tax breaks to landlords who house local people etc. But the easiest one is enforcing existing regulations and putting all of the residential area hotel rooms on airBnB back into the long term rental pool.
